Govt accords top priority to education in Pakistan.

On August 23, 2014, President of Pakistan, Mr. Mamnoon Hussain reiterated that the government accords top priority to promotion of education in Pakistan and called for steps for achieving the targets in education sector set by UN for Pakistan in its Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

The President made the remarks while chairing a meeting of National Commission for Human Development (NCHD) at the Aiwan-e- Sadr, wherein he was given a detailed presentation on the mandate, functions, activities, achievements and its various projects.

The meeting was attended by Minister of State for Education Trainings and Standards in Higher Education Muhammad Baligh-ur- Rehman, Secretary Education, Trainings and Standards in Higher Education Muhammad Ahsan Raja and Additional Secretary Education, Trainings and Standards in Higher Education Dr. Allah Bakhsh Malik and Director General, NCHD.

The President while highlighting the key role of the NCHD in improving the Human Development Indicators of the country said Pakistan was committed to achieve the goal of Universal Primary Education, adult literacy and the empowerment of Women.

The President called upon the provincial governments to extend all possible support to NCHD as their support was critical in successful implementation of the projects initiated by NCHD aimed at enhancing literacy and empowering women.

The President was also presented annual report 2013 of the NCHD that highlights the various activities, projects and achievements of NCHD during the year, 2013.

The President assured every possible support and patronage to Ministry of Education, Trainings and Standards in Higher Education and NCHD in its endeavors to enhance literacy and promote education in the country.

Scholarship for Economic & Development at University of Sussex

University of Sussex has announced scholarhsips for economic and social developments scholarships programmes in academic year 2014-15. Scholarhsips are available for master degree programmes. Duration of scholarhsips is one year and it fee is £5,000. Pakistani students are eligible for these scholarships and can apply for application by online mode.

Awards will be made on the basis of academic merit (not financial need).

Type of award: Postgraduate taught

Award amount: £5,000 fee waiver

Eligibility: In order to be considered for the Economic and Social Development Scholarship you must meet all of the following criteria:

• Be a nationals from, and resident in, one of the following countries: India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka.
• Be applying for a Master's degree in the following subject areas only: Anthropology, Development Studies/International Development (including the Institute of Development Studies), Economics, Education (including MA in Childhood and Youth Studies), Gender Studies, International Relations, Human Rights, Migration Studies;
• Be classified to pay fees at the 'overseas' rate.

Chulabhorn Graduate Institute Post-graduate Scholarship Program for Academic Year 2014

The CGI is a multidisciplinary post-graduate academic institute established in 2005, under the initiative of Professor Dr. Her Royal Highness Princess Chulabhorn Mahidol. The aim of CGI is to employ the most recent interactive teaching techniques used in leading educational and research institutions to train students in the program to be effective thinkers and leaders in their fields of expertise, to better serve their countries’ needs towards sustainable development. The CGI is presently offering programs leading to a Post-Graduate diploma and a Master’s degree in Applied Biological Sciences: Environmental Health, Environmental Toxicology, and Chemical Biology.

Eligibility

Scholarships are open to eligible  applicants who hold a Bachelor Degree with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.00 in one of the following fields:

·         Sciences: Chemistry, Biological, Biological Sciences, Molecular Biology, Environmental Sciences

·         Medical Sciences: Medicine, Medical Technology, Nursing

·         Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences

Applicants from other related fields are also welcome to apply.

Scholarship Coverage

Bolton Scholarship 2013/14

The Bolton 2013 Scholarship is worth £1,200  and may be awarded to any student that is studying a Science, Engineering or Mathematics course (excluding Sport and Psychology related courses) at the University of Bolton.

Amount

A Scholarship of £1,200, to be deducted from tuition fees, will be applied to qualifying courses for eligible students for the academic year 2013/14.

Eligibility

Students must be UK or EU and studying a qualifying undergraduate course of study at University of Bolton.

The undergraduate course of study must have commenced in September 2013 or later.

Tuition fees being charged for the course must be £8,400 per annum. Students must be paying the £8,400 tuition fees either via a tuition fee loan or be self funded. 

• The Scholarship will be paid for first, not subsequent equivalent or lower level HE courses only.  

Qualifying courses of study for the Bolton 2013 Scholarship are those included within Science, Engineering and Mathematics programmes with the exception of Sport and Psychology related courses.

To be eligible to receive the Bolton 2013 Scholarship the student’s household income must be under £42,611. 

In order that your eligibility to the Bolton 2013 Scholarship may be assessed you must apply to Student Finance England for funding for your course of study as soon as possible and both you and your sponsor(s) must give consent for the Student Loans Company to share information with the university. This is so that once your funding application has been financially assessed your household income details can be shared with the university.

This information will not be used by the university for any purpose other than calculating your eligibility for the Bolton 2013 Scholarship, and the information will not be shared with any third party.

Please note that even if you expect to receive the Bolton 2013 Scholarship you should still apply to Student Finance England for the full tuition fee for your course of study (if you are applying for a tuition fee loan), and any adjustment to your tuition fee figure will need to be made once your household income has been assessed and eligibility for fee waiver determined.

Please note the Scholarship will only be available for students in attendance on their course of study. The Scholarship will not be applied for students who have transferred to another institution, failed their course, or suspended or withdrawn from their studies.

Australian Scholarship -International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (IPRS)

Australian Government offers IPRS with following objectives :

• attract top quality international postgraduate students to areas of research strength in Australian higher education providers (HEP) ; and
• support Australia's research effort.

Scholarships are open to international students of all countries (except New Zealand) and are available for a period of two years for a research masters degree or three years for a research doctorate degree. The scholarship covers tuition fees and health cover costs for scholarship holders, and health cover costs for their dependants. A total of 330 IPRS places are awarded to HEPs each year at a cost of around $20m per annum.

Ramzan Talent Scholarship 2013-14

Ramzan Welfare Society has offered Ramzan Talent Scholarships for the promotion of education, general uplift and welfare of needy students. These scholarships are granted to students, admitted as regular students (“not self-supporting” category), to supplement the resources available to them for their studies in public sector colleges. Preference is given to studies in Computer / Engineering /  Medicine students.

The scholarships are granted mainly on the basis of consistently excellently academic record as indicated by marks (not less than 70% in annual examination) obtained in the previous examinations (taken as whole & not in parts) coupled with the established need of the applicant for financial assistance.

The foundation reserves the right to withdraw its sanction of the scholarship or to amend its terms, amount and/or duration at any time without assigning any reason.

LAST DATE FOR RECEIPT OF SCHOLARHIP FORM IS SEPTEMBER 30, 2013

Seven Pakistani Universities in Top World 250 Universities

 
Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) - a UK based ranking agency -has published World Universities Rankings of 2013.  QS website is http://www.topuniversities.com/university-rankings

As per said list, seven Pakistani universities are placed in the list of top 250 Asian universities and three Pakistani universities are in top 200 world universities.

According to ranking list, Quaid-i-Azam University (QAU), Islamabad is ranked at 119, National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST), Islamabad at 120, Aga Khan University (AKU), Karachi at 152, Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) at 191, University of Engineering and Technology (UET), Lahore at 200, University of Karachi at 201 and University of the Punjab, Lahore at 250.

Whereas, three Pakistani universities, University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF)  is at 142, Pir Mehr Ali Shah-Arid Agriculture University Rawalpindi (PMAS-AAUR) at 152 and Quaid-i-Azam University (QAU), Islamabad is at 172 in top 200 world universities in disciplines of agriculture and forestry.

Education experts describe this achievement to the HEC's reforms and dedicated work by university faculty and researchers.

Vice Chancellors Committee Meeting

A two -day V.C. Committee meeting has been held at Higher Education Commission, Islamabad from March 26, 2012, which was chaired by Chairperson VC Committee Syed Imtiaz Hussain Gillani (Vice-chancellor of KP University of Engineering and Technology, Peshawar) and first day was inaugurated by Federal Minister for Finance Dr Abdul Hafeez Shaikh.

This was 10th Vice Chancellors` Committee meeting, which was attended by Vice-Chancellors/Rectors of around 130 universities of the country. are participating in the two-day meeting.

While speaking at the occassoin, Dr. Sheikh said investment in higher education has resulted in creation of employment, initiation of research and socio-economic development. He, however, asked the universities to utilize their available infrastructure to generate finances/get financial support.

The Committee, unanimously, desired from the Government to increase budget for higher education upto four per cent of the GDP.

Higher Education Commission is being chopped/devolved...

The Higher Education Commission is being chopped up and a new body is being constituted namely Comission for Standard of Higher Education... The Chairman of Implementation Commission, Mr. Raza Rabbani has spoke in Senate today regarding devolution of the Higher Education Commission to provinces...

It has been apprehended that the degrees of Pakistan will not be recognized abroad, the standards of higher education would be drastically drowned, millions of dollars of foreign funding for higher educaiton will be stopped, scholarships will be stopped and universities will submerge in case the HEC is chopped....

The Higher Education Commission was established in September 2002 as a regulatory body of higher eduction, in lieu of the University Grants Commission with the purpose to lay down and formulate procedures, policies and guiding principles for improvement of higher education sector in the country. As per eighteenth constitutional amendment amedment's point 101, following clauses have been inserted in Part II of Federal Legislative Lists (Schedule IV to the Constitution) [18th amedment can be found at http://www.pakistani.org/pakistan/co...mendment.html]

Its evident from above that the HEC has been inserted to be a federal entity. However, the Implementation Commission is bent upon destroying an institution which has developed good reputation worldover where other instituitons of Pakistan are termed as corrupt etc...

We all have to try together to save this institution...

HEC issued NOC/Recommendation Letter for grant of Charter to DHA National Institute of Health and CUST (Capital University of Science & Technology)

The Higher Education Commission has issued NOC/Recommendation Letter to proposed DHA National Institute of Health & Social Sciences, Islamabad and Capital University of Science & Technology (CUST), Islamabad for grant of Charter in private sector from Federal Government.

DHA National Institute is a project of DHA Education Foundation Islamabad and envisages to start with offering degrees of B.Sc. Nursing and Midwifery and hopes to provide qualtiy education in association with Harvard Inc.

While, Capital University of Sciences & Technology is a project of Mohammad Ali Jinnah Education Trust. The Islamabad Campus of Mohammad Ali Jinnah University, Karachi is being uplifted/upgraded to the level of CUST and this university will provide education in versatile disciplines.

NWFP Assembly assent Abasyn University & Abdul Wali Khan University laws

The NWFP Assembly has approved laws of both Abasyn University, Peshawar and Abdul Wali Khan University, Mardan. Both universities were previously operating under Ordinance from Governor NWFP.

Abasyn University was initially established under Ordinance No.V of 2007 in December, 2007 in private sector, while Abdul Wali Khan University was established under Ordinance No.III in February, 2009 in public sector.

Mr. ImranUllah Khan is the Chancellor of Abasyn University. He is a comitted man in his middle age and has worked for promotion of education in Peshawar.

Charter of Abasyn University has been approved as it is, while around 50 amendments have been made in the Charter of Abdul Wali Khan University.

National Open Essay Competition 2009

Faculty of Arts, University of Sindh is organizing 1^st National Open Essay Writing Competition Commemorating the 2^nd Martyrdom Anniversary of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto.

The competition will be governed by following rules:

• The competition is open to all residents of Pakistan.

• Essays can be written in any of the languages spoken and written in Pakistan. But only those languages would qualify for competition in which we receive at least ten essays.

• There would be 3 separate prizes: 1^st, 2^nd and 3^rd amounting of Rs. 20000.00, Rs. 15000.00 and Rs. 10000.00 respectively for all languages.

• The essay must not be less than 1500 (Fifteen hundred) words and more than 3000 (Three thousand) words.

• The essay must be computer composed in A-4 size page (single-sided) Times New Roman with 12 (Twelve) font size. Essayists in languages other than English should observe standard page and font. Submission of essays through e-mail will be appreciated. However, hard copies are also equally acceptable.

• Competitors should send their brief introduction along with the script of their essays.

• The essays must reach the undersigned on or before October 30, 2009.

• Names of the winners will be announced on December 27, 2009 on the day of Benazir Bhutto Shaheed’s 2^nd anniversary and the prizes will also be given on the same day at Shaikh Ayaz Auditorium, University of Sindh, Jamshoro, Sindh, Pakistan. The winning scholars will be invited over to the venue through timely information.

• The decision of the panel of experts as appointed by this office shall be final.
