Choosnig a Career . . .

In our society, a child upto matriculation/secondary school is solely directed by his/her parents. But after passing secondary school, he thinks himself to be independent and wish to take his own decisions for his future. It is a point in time where one of the most important decisions of this child's life has to be taken. The decision of future career and his future life. A question arises, should parents make this decision or student himself?


Let’s first try to imagine what happens in most cases. Usually it is parents (especially father) who take charge and decide the future of their child. Even if the child is confident enough to take his decision, he is usually told to that he is too young to make a good decision.


Parents think and say that they have spent time and better now what is good and bad. Their saying that the child is too young to be making such a decision does have some merit but then again parents themselves do not know what they are doing or are they simply follow guidance of others and demand of that specific time.


What happens, is that after matriculation/secondary school if a child feels that he has a liking for mathematics, physics, or chemistry he is told to opt for medical sciences or to study business & commerce. On the other hand, if he is good in biology, he is advised to become an engineer or computer professional . There is no second thought given to this matter by the parents to student. Both parents and child think that studying commerce, engineering, computer or medicine is the same as studying the basic science subjects.


What people often do not understand is that engineering is only farly related to basic science subjects. Strictly speaking, it is a field derived from the basic sciences but quite different. The topics studied are not that of basic science instead applications of the principles that have been derived from the basic sciences are instead studied. Since students usually do not know what they are going to study, say engineering (till the time they actually enroll in a programme and begin study), when they finally do they can find it uninteresting, especially if it turns out to be not what they had imagined. This can have devastating consequences.


If the student does not drop out, then his loss of interest tends to negatively impact academic achievement and he scores badly low. He studies only to pass the exams and to somehow just be rid of the subject. And this becomes gravely concernable if he gets teachers who themselves know nothing or know very little [with exception]. Most of the teachers can inspire nothing and who also want to hurry and just get the hell out of the lecture halls. Good teachers, out of lot, seldom try to take botherance in guiding childern because its difficuilt to educate child or his parents at that time.


At the end of the day, it is student, who is blamed that he did not study well. It is the responsibility of our educational system and the institutions must take at least some responsibility. The system offers no counselling to parents or students. This leads to the inevitable case of many a student studying something for which he or she is completely mismatched, resultantly flocks of unthethered sheep and goats is generated, who dont have any thinking of their own........
