CATEGORIZATION OF PRIVATE SECTOR UNIVERSITIES/INSTITUTIONS

The Higher Education Commission has categorized private sector universities/degree awarding institutions (DAI) in following four categories:

Category W:       Universities/DAI meeting requirements
Category X :       Universities/DAI with minor short comings
Category Y:        Universities/DAI not meeting requirements
Category Z :       Universities/DAI seriously deficient 

The categorization of private universities/institutions is based on fulfillment of requirements of ‘Criteria/Guidelines for Establishment of a New University/Institution of Higher Education’ [The Criteria was approved by the Federal Cabinet and is to be followed by the HEC and all provinces]. Upgradation of universities is approved by the Chairman of the HEC considering recommendations made by the Inspection Committee.

The process was started in 2005, when a high ranked Chancellors Committee necessitated the HEC to initiate processes of evaluation/physical inspection of private universities.  Said category is not academic ranking of universities/institutions.  Academic ranking is a different phenomena involving consideration of academic and research dimensions of universities/institutions.
